.
An
infection
caused by prions,
infectious
protein
particles of recent recognition. It is contagious through direct
contact
with infected tissue, and possibly by ingestion.
A
variant produces the "mad cow disease" in humans. Nearly 15% of cases are
family
members.
Causes.
Contact
or ingestion of products from the infected
central
nervous
system
.
Other sources of
infection
are more dubious and the subject of intense studies.
Signs and symptoms.
Patients have
a
rapidly progressive
dementia
with myoclonus (repeated contractions of small
muscle
groups)
Initially may appear:
Slow thinking,
Difficulty concentrating,
Loss of memory and.
Loss of trial.
At the end of the
disease
to move
dementia
:
Mood swings,
Hallucinations and, ultimately,
dementia
.
Risk Factors.
Contact
with tissues of the
nervous
system

cornea

The definitive diagnostic test is the microscopic study of
a
sample of brain tissue obtained by biopsy or autopsy.
Complications.
Those arising from the deterioration of brain
functions
(injuries,
infections
, malnutrition,
Forecast.
Does not exist.
Unfortunate. The
disease
is fatal.
