Before the arrival of Columbus, the ancient inhabitants of Mexico already used pazote for its medicinal properties. Its leaves and flowers give off a strong odor because of the essential oil they contain.

Habitat: is originally from Mexico and Central America. Their cultivation has spread to the United States, South America and some Mediterranean countries, especially France.

Description: herbaceous plant, or evergreen perennial, the family of Quenopodiáceas, which reaches 40 to 100 cms. tall. It has the highly branched stem. Its flowers, yellow or green, are very small, and grow in terminal spikes.

Used parts: the leaves and flowers.

Properties and indications: the essence of pazote is constituted by oil terpénicos (cymene, limonene, terpineno, etc. And ascaridol. Has the following properties:

Tonic stomach and carmine (prevents intestinal gas) Its application gives very good results in the indigestions, stomach aches, flatulence and lack of appetite.

And anti - worming (destroys intestinal parasites) It is their most important application. It is highly effective against Ascaris and hookworms, and not so much against tapeworms and pinworms.

Use: takes infusion, with 15 or 20 grams. of leaves and flowers for every liter of water. As a tonic stomach, takes a cup after each meal. As anthelmintic, takes a cup in the morning on an empty stomach, for 3 days. Administer a laxative after each shot of epazote, to facilitate the expulsion of the parasites (castor oil, aloe or sacred shell)
