The rhizome and roots.

Active Principles.

Resin (2 - 12%) or "podofilina": lignans and their free heterósidos: Podophyllotoxin (20%) peltatinas (15%) desoxipodofilotoxina, podofilotoxona.

Drug Action.

Sharp - lax laxative, irritating effect on the intestinal mucosa, increasing intestinal peristalsis (action similar to that of the laxative Anthraquinone) colagogo. Antiviral. Have been described and cytotoxic effects of the Antimitotic podofilina, so it might be useful in the treatment of certain tumors.

Indications.

Occasional constipation, stones and gallstones dyskinesias. In external use: warts, papillomas and condylomata, and as an adjunct in the treatment of certain skin tumors.

Contraindications.

Habitual constipation, pregnancy, lactation, irritable colon, obstruction of the biliary tract, thrombocytopenia, granulocytopenia (Peris et al. 95)

Side Effects.

It can produce violent colic, with muco - bloody diarrhea, nausea and vomiting and even coma and death.

Caution / Poisoning.

We recommend prescribing solely for topical use.

Galenica forms / Dosage.

External use:

Suspension of podofilino (at 0, 50 - 1%) in petroleum jelly. Apply topically.

Settlement of resin podofilino (USP) Solution to 25% in tincture of Benjuí.
