asarum europaeum
Castilian: bácara.

Family: Aristoloquiáceas.

DESCRIPTION:

Creeping plant. 10 - 15 cm. tall. Leaves large, kidney - shaped, dark green. Flower color purple or green.

PART USED:

Roots and leaves.

HABITAT:

European forests. In Spain grows only in the northern third.

INDICATIONS AND DRUG ACTION.

Emetic.

Cathartic laxative (currently only used in veterinary medicine)

Estornutatorio (nasal congestion, rhinitis)

Active Principles.

Essential oil (1%) asarone, aldehyde arisílico, methyl eugenol, bornyl acetate, terpenes, Sesquiterpenes, diasarona. Alkaloids: Asarina. Ascorbic acid, vitamin B1.

Indications.

Not currently used. Was used for the treatment of chronic and atrophic rhinitis, bronchitis, asthma and gastric ulcers.

Contraindications.

Pregnancy, infancy, children, patients with hepatopathy, neurological diseases.

Caution / Poisoning.

The asarone is highly toxic, producing a burning sensation on the tongue, sneezing, irritation of the gastric mucosa and may be narcotic and abortion. At high doses can cause fatigue, tachycardia, seizures, Mydriasis, photophobia, shortness of breath and even coma and death from respiratory paralysis.

Having regard to the alcohol content of the extract fluid.

Galenica forms / Dosage.

Fluid extract (1: 1) 0. 05 g / day as expectorant, 0. 2 g / day as emetic (1 g = 39 drops)

USES.

INFUSION.

5 - 10 g of fresh root for each cup of water. 1 or 2 cups per day maximum.

EXTERNAL USE.

Using dust from the dried root or hohas to remove the nasal mucus (just a pinch)
