The rhizome, roots.

Active Principles.

Alkaloids (1 - 1. 5%) of steroid structure complex: Group yer - Veratrum: yervina (50% of the total alkaloids) veratramina and their glycosides (pseudoyervina, veratrosina) Ce - Veratrum Group: Protoveratrinas A and B.

Drug Action.

Anxiety and presents an action strongly hypotensive. Parasiticide in topical use.

It is not recommended its use. See section of precautions)

Externally has been used against scabies.

Caution / Poisoning.

Not recommended for use due to the low therapeutic margin: the drug dose is very close to the toxic, which makes it very difficult to use either the plant, as its alkaloids.

The confusion with gentian has caused fatal accidents.

Vedegambre poisoning produces a blistering action on the gastrointestinal mucous membranes, with a great sense of burning, hypersecretion, nausea, vomiting, hypothermia, cold sweats, diarrhea and depression of cardiac and respiratory nerve centers, which can cause death.

Lethal dose (adult) = 2 grams of plant or 20 mg of veratrina.
