Used Part.

The sclerotia.

Active Principles.

Amines: tyramine, histamine.

Alkaloids lysergic acid derivatives, of two types:

Water: ergometrine or ergobasina, ergometrinina or ergobasinina.

No water:

Group of ergotamine (ergotamine, ergosina and its isomers)

Group of dihidroergotoxina (ergocristina, ergocriptina, ergocornina and their isomers)

Drug Action.

The alkaloids of the group of dihidroergotoxina produce an effect on blocking alpha receptors: vasodilation central, peripheral vasoconstriction (in low doses) relaxation of the cervix, decreased blood pressure.

Indications.

Bleeding due to fibroids, postpartum polyps. Hemicránea, paroxysmal tachycardia, cerebral circulatory failure.

Contraindications.

Pregnancy hypertension. Incompatible with vasoconstriction and with macrolide antibiotics, and that enhance peripheral vasoconstriction (Peris et al. 1995)

MAOI antidepressant treatment with the tyramine interacts may trigger hypertensive crisis (Farnworsth: 34)

Caution / Poisoning.

It is a very active plant: incorrect dosages, differences in the content of alkaloids, individual sensitivity to the drug administrations or long, can determine vomiting, cramps, spasms, delusions and even death.

Galenica forms / Dosage.

We recommend the use of alkaloids and their associations in the form of pharmaceutical standard, which facilitates the strength and reduces the possibility of poisoning.
