Names.

Castilian: Christ's thorn, thorn holy paliuro.

French: paliure, Epine du Christ, carrying chapeau.

Description: deciduous shrub, rarely tree, up to 4 meters high, well branched, with the twigs in zig - zag and usually hanging. Leaves alternate, more or less ovadas, 2 - 4 cm. long, with margins denticulados and 2 parallel to the central nerves. Petiole short, pubescent. Stipules thorny. Flowers yellowish, small, with 5 petals. Fruit in Samara with a rounded wing.

Cultivation and uses: It multiplies by seed and cuttings. It has somewhat slow growth. Requires more or less sun exposure. Tolerates limestone soils and somewhat dry. Allows pruning. It is used in isolation.

Drug Action.

Popularly used as a diuretic, cholesterol, hypotensive.

Indications.

Urolithiasis, oliguria, hypercholesterolemia, prevention of arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure.

Contraindications.

Do not prescribe oral dosage forms with alcohol content to children under two years or consultants in the process of alcohol addiction.

Caution / Poisoning.

Its use as a diuretic in the presence of hypertension, heart disease or kidney failure moderate or severe, should be done only by prescription and under medical supervision, to the danger that can result in uncontrolled contribution of liquids, the possibility of an uncompensated tension.

Take into account the alcohol content of the fluid extract and tincture.

Galenica forms / Dosage.

Infusion: 30 g / l, 3 or 4 cups a day.

Fluid extract (1: 1) 30 drops three times daily.

Tincture (1: 5) 50 - 100 drops, one to three times a day.
