Liver cancer
.
Malignant growth of
liver
cells.
It may be
primary
, which is formed in the
liver
or secondary (metastatic) to
cancer
of the rectum and colon,
breast
, lung, pancreas or skin.
Most cancers are related to alterations of
liver
(
cirrhosis
) or
hepatitis
B or
C
.
It can occur at any age
but
more in men over 60.
Diagnosis and Treatment.
Sodium
retention and fluid in the abdomen and lower extremities.
Complications.
Incurable and fatal in the short term.
The pain can be controlled.
Causes.
Unknown.
Metastases (cancers of rooting from other places) are
common
by the special vascularization of the
liver
(it happens all the blood from the digestive tract before distributed by the rest of the body)
Signs and symptoms.
The most characteristic symptoms are:
Loss of appetite and
weight
.
Mass in the upper abdomen. Grade fever.
Yellowish eyes and skin.
Lethargy.
Anemia
.
Risk Factors.
Cirrhosis
.
Use of anabolic steroids (used by the cultures)
Metabolic
disorders
.
Chronic
inflammation of the
liver
by excessive
alcohol
consumption or
chronic
hepatitis
(types B and
C
)
Vaccine for
Hepatitis
B.
Prevention.
Blood tests (alpha)
liver
biopsy, X - ray, ultrasound, Scanner, MRI studies and radioactive.
Surgery to remove the tumor area.
Liver
transplant in some patients.
Anticancer drugs (chemotherapy) and
radiation
(radiotherapy) as palliative (to treat the discomfort, not to cure)
