The aerial parts. Often used as a substitute for the pony tail (Equisetum arvense)

Active Principles.

Saponósidos: equisetósido; flavonoids, potassium salts and silica, traces of alkaloid nicotine, palustrina.

Drug Action.

Diuretic, remineralizing, haemostatic.

Indications.

States that require an increase in urine output: genitourinary disorders (cystitis, ureteritis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, oliguria, urolithiasis) hiperazotemia, hyperuricemia, gout, high blood pressure, edema, overweight accompanied by fluid retention. Consolidation of fractures, epistaxis, metrorrhagia.

Caution / Poisoning.

It is often falsified by other species of Equisetum (palustre, ramosissimum) which are toxic, due to its content may be neuro palustrina and nephrotoxic and produce colitis.

Its prolonged use can cause nervous disturbances (headache, tenesmus, anorexia, dysphagia)

The use of diuretics in the presence of hypertension or heart disease, should be done only by prescription and under medical supervision, given the possibility of occurrence of decompensation or tension, if the elimination of potassium is considerable, enhancing the effect of cardiac.

Galenica forms / Dosage.

Decoction: one tablespoon per cup of dessert. Boil 5 minutes. 2 or 3 cups a day between meals.

Dust: 50 - 100 grams, one to three times a day.
