The root and rhizome of varieties senega Polygala L. and Polygala Tenuiflora Willd. P. sibirica L.

Active Principles.

Saponósidos triterpenic (5%) senegasaponósido (which is hydrolyzed to glucose, arabinose, methylpentan acids senegénico, poligálico and senegenina) minerals, sugars, poligalitol, oil accompanied by espinasterol, traces of essential oil (0. 2%) containing a 25 - 45% methyl salicylate.

Drug Action.

Anti - inflammatory, expectorant, mucolytic (fluidifica bronchial secretions, skin and salivary) Diuretic, laxative.

Indications.

Respiratory ailments: sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, pulmonary emphysema, flu. Popularly also used to combat rheumatic diseases.

Contraindications.

Gastroduodenal ulcer, ulcerative colitis (see side effects)

Do not prescribe oral dosage forms with alcohol content to children under two years or consultants in the process of alcohol addiction.

Side Effects.

The mechanism of action of the expectorant polígala is because the saponosides irritate the gastric mucosa, which reflects an increase of bronchial secretions, which are more fluid and easier to remove. Due to its high content saponosides in prolonged treatments, for individual or hypersensitivity overdose can cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

In fresh is irritating to mucous membranes.

Caution / Poisoning.

Exclusive use by prescription and under medical supervision.

Take into account the alcohol content of the extract fluid from the dye and syrup.

Galenica forms / Dosage.

Decoction: 3 tablespoons per liter, boil 2 minutes. Infuse for 10 minutes. Take 3 or 4 cups a day.

Fluid extract (1: 1) 20 - 40 drops, one to three times a day.

Tincture (1: 10) 50 - 100 drops, one to three times a day.

Dry extract (5: 1) 150 to 300 mg / day.

Syrup (10% extract fluid) three tablespoons of dessert a day.
